Best printers for iPhone

It is effortlessly to print directly from your iPhone instead of booting up your desktop or laptop. Here we show you how to print whether you want to print wirelessly or via cable. We assume that the printers most of you have at home are from the brands like Canon, Brother, Epson & HP.

This guide gives you several solutions when you want to print from your iPhone with just the printer you have at home. You will learn how to install your printer on iPhone and how to set up wireless printer for your iPhone so that with a few clicks you can print directly, instead of having to turn on your computer. By adding your printer to iPhone, you have a fixed connection between printer and the device.

Print wirelessly from your iPhone with AirPrint

You can use this guide for both your iPhone and iPod Touch.

Before you can print from iPhone, you need to start by checking these two things:

1: Does your printer have AirPrint? - You can see the list of AirPrint printers here

If your printer is not AirPrint compatible, then you can still print wirelessly. Here the solution may be to purchase an Airport Express device. With this you can connect via USB to your printer and you can print wirelessly via AirPrint.

If you own a MacBook, you can download various programs on the AppStore that make it possible to print wirelessly.

To find the app that suits your particular printer and your needs, you can advantageously search around the AppStore so that you find the app that is just right. Through Google, you can also find the suitable app for wireless printing. By searching for your printer name + MacBook + driver, Google will list the options that work best for you.

2: Make sure your iPhone is logged in to the same Internet connection and that you are within range of the network.

And then we come to it:

Print from iPhone to wireless printer via AirPrint

1: Open the app you want to print from.

2: To print, click on the 'Share' icon:

If you do not see them on the screen, click on the three dots icon.

3: Click on ‘Print’. Still cannot find ‘Share' or ‘Print’ as an option? Then you need to use the instruction or help function of that app. Note: Not all apps allow you to use Air Print as a print option.

4: Click and select the Air Print compatible printer from the list you want to use.

5: Here you can also define how many prints you want.

6: Click on 'Print' in the upper right corner.

Remember : If, for example, you need to print from a public place such as a library or similar: AirPrint does not support public wireless networks, such as public mobile hotspots, Bluetooth or mobile data connections, neither 3G nor 4G.

Print wirelessly from your iPhone via MacBook

If you have a printer that is not AirPrint compatible, you have the option to print from your iPhone via your MacBook.

There are two ways you can print wirelessly from your iPhone with your MacBook:

1: Without AirPrint: There are various apps in the AppStore that you can use on your MacBook if your printer is not AirPrint compatible - this could be the Print Direct app, for example, but check if there is an app that matches your printer.

You can choose apps that have different purposes and that can perform different actions:

  • Add a printer to your Mac with the Print n Share app
  • Print via Wi-Fi from iOS: Handy Print
  • Print wirelessly with Printopia

Remember: You must have your Mac turned on to print this way, but it is an easy fix without needing to have a printer compatible with AirPrint.

2: With AirPrint:

You have the option to print wirelessly from your iPhone through your MacBook to the printer. If your MacBook or iMac has been updated to macOS Sierra or a recent update, you can print from here without any other action and without downloading or installing printer drivers. Now all you have to do is send your document to your MacBook via Cloud, Mail or similar.

1: First, make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-FI as your MacBook.

2: Next, click on 'File' at the top of the screen and select 'Print'.

3: Now select the ‘Printer’ menu and click on the AirPrint printer you want to use in the list under ‘Nearby Printers’.

NOTE: Can't find your AirPrint printer in the list? Then select 'Add Printer' in the 'Printer' menu and then just add your printer to the list of printers.

Remember to define your printing preferences under print settings that you need for your printing. Click on 'Print'.

What do you do if your HP printer does not have AirPrint?

HP offers up to several free apps that can be used both via iPhone or other smartphone. You can find printing apps in the App Store that can be used with most HP wireless printers and Apple iOS devices. Here is an example of apps for HP:

HP ePrint

HP ePrint is a cloud-based service: It enables you to mail a print job directly to a Web-enabled HP printer from an active Internet connection.

You can use the service to print documents, photos, e-mail, and Web pages after you set up the printer for the HP ePrint service and your iPhone is connected to the WI-Fi network.

HP ePrint App

HP has also developed a version of HP ePrint. The HP ePrint mobile app can be used directly from your mobile phone and you can print to a supported HP printer on the same Wi-Fi network that your iPhone is registered to.

You can also print from cloud services such as Dropbox and Google Drive to all networked HP printers that are on the same local wireless network as your Apple iOS device.

Print from iPhone to Brother printer

Brother has many printers that are AirPrint compatible. You will find the guide to using AirPrint here (link)

If you have a printer without AirPrint, you can alternatively use the app that Brother itself has developed and print directly from the app iPrint & Scan. It's free and can be downloaded from the AppStore. It can also be used via Android and Windows smartphones.

Through the app, you can print photos, documents and websites directly to a selected Brother printer, no matter where you are. The app also has a scanning function, so you - if you have a printer with a scanner - can also scan from the printer and back to the phone. This can be an advantage if you need to use documents you have in paper form electronically.

4: Select ‘Print’

5: Make sure that your Brother printer is selected. If another or no printer is selected, you should click on ‘Select printer’.

7: Click on ‘Print’

If your printer supports the function Secure Function Lock, it is still possible to print, although ‘Print’ is limited for each user. If you would like to change the settings for ‘Restricted printing’ via AirPrint, you must set the function Secure Function Lock to public mode and eventually limit printing to public.

What is Secure Function Lock?

Secure Function Lock gives you the opportunity to administrate the user account on your Brother printer. Here you can manage, who can print, fax, scan and copy. That happens because users are assigned a unique PIN or given an NFC access card. You can also manage user access in relation to functions, where you can, for example, limit the access on color printing, copy and fax.

Here you can easily use Google Cloud. You need to have a few things ready before you can start printing - remember that once this is done, you do not need to do it again next time you are printing. These are initial steps that are required for the first time.

To get started, you need to use a Google Chrome browser. Then it is important to do the following before you are ready to print:

1: A Google Account with a Gmail associated. If you do not have Gmail, you can create one here

2: Chrome browser - you can download and install Google Chrome here

You can find the Gmail app here

Let’s get started to connect your printer

First, enable the connection to the Google Cloud Printer using a Windows, Mac or Linux computer connected to the printer:

NOTE: This is done on your PC / MacBook - not on iPhone:

1. Click on Google Chrome browser.

2. Log in to your Google user account.

3. Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar

4. Select ‘Settings’.

5. Click the 'Show advanced settings' link.

6. Scroll down to the "Google Cloud Printer" section. Click 'Sign in' on Google Cloud Print.

After installing Google Cloud Print, you can almost print from your iPhone. Just remember to send / forward documents, photos, files etc. to your Gmail and or Google Docs first - and print from here.

With Cloud you can choose to print on the registered printer from any computer - the registration of the printer follows your Google account.

Google Cloud Print lets you print documents and attachments from Gmail, web pages from the Chrome browser, and files from Google Docs.

If you need to print images or files from Google Docs, it is important that you choose to print through a browser and not through the Google app. Otherwise it will not work.

You can print to all the printers you have associated with your account - even if they are turned off. The files will be printed when you turn on the printer.
